Dad

Free Fallin' - the song that takes me back
to driving up north in the truck
still makes me giggle a little

You're not lost unless you run out of gas - the rule that takes me back
to the snowmobile trip that would never end
but my hands stayed warm under yours

Can't can't do anything - the wisdom that takes me back
to awful math homework at the kitchen table
I was right, I have never used it

You can do anything if you put your mind to it - the advice that takes me back
to all the times I said I couldn't and you said I could
you were right

Wonderful tonight - the tune that takes me back
to every wedding we ever went to and danced together
even if the words weren't for daddy/daughter

It all ends up in the same place - the words that take me back
to my foods touching on my plate and the only thing you said that I never believed
it's still gross, foods shouldn't touch

  1. Nice slice. So poignant. I lost my dad more than two years ago and I often recall his voice saying things like, "wet leaves are as slippery as ice." The things we keep are so interesting, aren't they?

  2. Nicely done, Miss Robin. I love how a song or a smell can put you right back to a specific time or place. I think that in the following days, I might try to do the same thing.

  3. Music & memories, memories & music. Such a nifty structure for poetry. Thanks for inviting us to share in your personal connections & recollections, Robin.

  4. This challenge really gives you space and time to look at things in a different way. I appreciate you sharing a bit of your relationship. At least once a week I tell myself "you are your father's daughter". What words of his have you shared with your children?

  6. Very touching tribute to your dad! He sounds like a wise man that instilled many of your great traits in you! Songs are always a trigger for my memories, too.

  8. This is a beautiful piece Robin. Your dad gave you the greatest gift anyone could ever give another person...unconditional love and strength to do anything you put your mind to. Great slice!

  9. Thank you for this, Robin. You have written a treasured piece about your Dad's quotes and things he does and this has made me think of my own Dad. You have given me inspiration for writing and warmed my heart. :-)
