We used a powerful new tool for reading this week...
A Flashlight!
Our March is Reading Month theme at school is "Reading is a Bright Idea!" When we kicked off the month of March we had a read in where the whole school gathered in the gym with a good book, we turned off the lights and the kids read by flashlight.
My kids loved it so much I decided to try it in the classroom. It was our best day of independent reading all year! They were quiet, they read the whole time, and no one asked to get drinks or use the bathroom.
Guess what we are going to do more often? FLASHLIGHT READING! :)
Great idea. Maybe I can try it for my older students. Anyway to entice children to read is welcome.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea! I'm definitely going to suggest it at my school =) Thanks for sharing the cute story and pictures!
ReplyDeleteYour flashlight reading looks so fun! Did they have special colors on the flashlights? It looks either red or green, maybe just a trick of the photo. Keep the magic going!
ReplyDeleteI love that the whole school celebrated this together. I’ve used Flashlight Friday when I was in elementary school for days before breaks and long weekends. Always a success!
ReplyDeleteI remember my MIL (a retired reading specialist) bought my daughter a flashlight for just this purpose when she was little. Oh, what fun it was when she read with it. (Though she often shined it in our eyes for kicks. Ah, to be six again!)
