It's That Time Again...

It's parent-teacher conference week.  In the fall, I dread the conference but enjoy meeting the parents.  At that point, I know the kids but not the parents and it's good to meet them.  I do not enjoy the tough conversations that often arise at those conferences.  There are always the kids who have never had any school or social experiences...those often lead to hard conversations about behaviors or academic skills (or lack thereof).  Not knowing the parents yet, you just never know what to expect.

But now...

Nervous faces arrive
Nice to see you again
Let me show you
Look at the growth
Updating skills, surpassing goals
High fives and fist bumps

Even where struggles exist
Improvements are shared
Progress is made
Next steps planned
New goals to meet
Thanks for coming
Smiling faces retreat

And then...

I breath a sigh of relief as one day comes to and end while looking forward to tomorrow and starting all over again.  There are more lessons to be taught and more parents to greet.  But first, I think I will go home and have a little 9:00 pm dinner.

  1. Ah, the joys of parent teacher conferences! I love that you captured both the joys of sharing growth and the weariness felt at the end of a long satisfying round of conferences!

  2. You've captured the ambivalent feelings we teachers have about conferences. We know they're necessary, but they can be difficult. And oh, the late nights! Our spring conferences were in February, and I'm glad they're behind us. ;-)

  3. I feel the exact same way! I actually LOVE parent teacher conferences in the spring! I get to share so much with the parents- and its a huge "great job" to the kiddos and a little pat on the back to myself :)

  4. I definitely understand your feelings of apprehension and exhaustion. I hope yours continue to go well!
